CABINETRY GUIDES

Cabinet Door Finishes Compared: Lacquer, Melamine, Laminate, and Veneer

Choose a cabinet finish by its appearance, substrate compatibility and maintenance requirements. Lacquer, melamine, laminate and veneer describe different surface systems, so compare an approved sample and a written specification before comparing prices.

Four finish directions

Finish General description Questions to resolve
Lacquer A coating applied to a prepared surface Coating system, sheen, colour reference and care instructions
Melamine A resin-treated decorative surface on a panel Panel grade, edge construction, texture and cleaning guidance
Laminate A decorative surface layer bonded to a substrate Laminate type, bonding, edge detail and approved application
Veneer A thin layer of real wood over a substrate Species, grain matching, topcoat and acceptable natural variation

Approve a finish consistently

  1. Review a physical sample in the lighting of the intended space.
  2. Include the door edge, profile and handle position in the approval sample.
  3. Agree a colour reference and how natural variation or batch differences will be assessed.
  4. Request cleaning instructions for the selected system.

Terms such as “laminate” and “lacquer” can cover multiple products. Ask for the complete surface build-up and do not treat a photograph as the final colour standard. This comparison is a selection guide, not confirmation that every finish is offered for every product.

Frequently asked questions

Are veneer and laminate the same?

No. Wood veneer uses a layer of real wood; a laminate surface is a different decorative system.

Can a finish photograph replace a sample?

A photograph is useful for direction, but the approval process should use a physical sample and an agreed reference.

How should I choose between matte and gloss?

Compare samples, cleaning needs and the surrounding materials; request the available options for your product.
