CABINETRY GUIDES

Plywood vs MDF vs Particleboard Cabinets: Which Is Best for Projects?

No single cabinet substrate is best for every project. Compare plywood, MDF and particleboard by the intended location, finish, joint design and documented panel grade, then approve the complete cabinet specification.

Compare the substrate and the application

Panel Construction What to check
Plywood Bonded layers of wood veneer Veneer quality, adhesive specification, core consistency and fastening details
MDF Wood fibres bonded into a panel Machined profile, surface preparation, grade and edge finishing
Particleboard Wood particles bonded into a panel Panel grade, fastening system, edge treatment and intended environment

Make a project-based decision

  1. Identify wet zones, cleaning conditions and the expected use of the cabinets.
  2. Separate the requirements for carcasses, doors, shelves and backs; they do not have to use the same substrate.
  3. Compare samples with the same finish and construction details, rather than judging a panel name alone.
  4. Record the approved grade, dimensions and relevant test documents in the order specification.

A material label alone does not establish moisture resistance, emissions compliance or cabinet service life. Ask the supplier to identify the exact product and supporting documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Is plywood always better than MDF?

No. The appropriate choice depends on the component, finish, construction and required performance.

Is particleboard automatically unsuitable for projects?

No. Evaluate the specified grade, hardware connection and intended environment rather than the name alone.

What panel thickness does Tech Forest use?

Thickness is confirmed for the individual specification; a universal factory thickness is not stated here.
